The Myth of Seed Woman

by Joan Malkerson

unexplored waters covered a globe of barren rock … a planet Earth in the Universe just finding its orbit around the sun … a planet close to a new star burning brightly.

Moon and Stars lit up the night sky reflecting sparkling lights from the deep enchanting waters.

Every day the Sun flew over the eternal blue sky. Different shapes of the cycles of the moon and stars at night kept watch over the primordial waters … a world of liquidness.

Where did the vast and precious waters come from?

According to legend, the water crystals with unique attachments and reactions connected with one another, filling the skies as a large and beautiful flowing cloud. The cloud dropped its crystal veil onto the planet. This shower sprayed water molecules all over the globe. The potential for life was born. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can exist without water.

The Seed Woman was born in these crystals. She floated among the moving water waves and flowing environments. Her life was just above the waters. One could almost see her in the morning dawn or evening twilight as she changed colors and moved quickly in the early or fading light.

Seed Woman had dreams and visions of another kind of world where life would grow around the water. Seed Woman knew something was calling her … a longing … an intuition for new beginnings. Seed Woman had yet to discover that she carried within her the ability to create new life from the shimmering waters. Her origins came from Earth Goddess, a mysterious ancient faith beyond the stars and time. The sacred book called The Emerald Tablet declared her as the source of growing life.

One day, Seed Woman evoked a song to the Sun, Moon and Stars asking for companionship. Hearing the song, a Star flew over to her and they sang together of gratitude and love. Seed Woman wanted to understand why the Star landed on her hand? Right before her eyes, the Star transformed into a colorful blue bird, a Spirit Bird, Starbird. She opened her heart to tell Starbird of her longing to see a new place surrounding and above the flowing waters.

“I am here alone in these beautiful waters dreaming of a new domain filled with plants and animals outside the waters. Nature would flourish and produce food and sustainable seeds that could be returned to the land and grow again and again.”

The Starbird heard her heart longing for a new community of life that would create a new world. The Starbird decided to fulfill Seed Woman’s destiny. The spirit bird spoke these words back to her,

“Go to the ocean and find purple algae and bring them to the rocks. This action will begin the transformation of the algae into new plants living above the water.”

She followed the Starbird’s instructions and lifted purple algae out of the water onto the rocks. The algae felt slippery and moist in her open hands; it seemed so healthy and beautiful flowing in the water. As the days passed, the Seed Woman noticed the sun’s harsh rays depleting the algae’s composition. Gravity weighed heavily on the delicate structures. In the hot, barren wasteland of rocks, these little organisms struggled and quietly slipped back into the sea. The purple plants were creatures of the sea and would not survive, yet, outside of its nurturing salty realm.

The Starbird said,

So, Seed Woman, impatient and somewhat discouraged, tried a second time. Seed Woman placed the purple algae closer to the salty waters. Aware of the harshness of the sun, she splashed water on them every day to keep them moist. She began to sing a song from her heart envisioning a new land above the flowing waters. Starbird joined in the chorus and both of them sang day and night to these little plants. Nevertheless — again the purple algae crawled back into the cool waters for life. Seed Woman was exhausted and disappointed.

An internal spirit told her to try one more time.

For the third time, Seed Woman began her ritual of pouring water on the delicate algae and singing a song from her heart. Empathizing with Seed Woman’s plight, Starbird called another baby Starbird to join them. She hoped all three singing together would create the sacred sound to transform the purple algae to survive.

All night long, under the Stars and Moon, the threesome sang and danced with the plants. Inspired by their collective imaginations, Baby Starbird, Starbird and Seed Woman sang many more songs, and always with the same music of Earth sounds repeating over and over again. And then — as if by magic — the small slippery plants began to transform to the color of Emerald Green. Chlorophyll, the green of the world, came alive. Green became the energy and food for the plants to live outside the water and produce seeds that would repeat the cycle of life over and over again. The transformation of the algae was complete. All three rejoiced in seeing the new life.

The Sun came up over the horizon. The magical chanting song changed the water plants to become suitable and thrive in their new environment. Rays of the Sun entered the little green algae and made an electron burst of dancing energy … just like the Dance of Seed Woman … that produced sugar, giving them nutrients to continue life and grow more cells together. New and different plants were born on planet Earth.

Pine trees began to grow and then the flowers. The first flower was an Amborella, a very small white flower. Different plants propagated and spread their seeds over the burgeoning land. More oxygen produced by the trees filled the air. Tall trees provided shade protecting new types of plant growth. Microbial organisms enriched the soil. Mushrooms popped out of this humus-filled organic soil. Life above the waters began to emerge and prosper and become even more beautiful.

With Seed Woman’s song of hope, the seeds spread far and wide across the world into many different environments. The seeds held water and nutrients inside their protective shell and would be planted and grow and produce new life again and again. Seed Woman, Starbird and Baby Starbird created music to help the seeds transform to perform these functions of growth.

This was Seed Woman’s hope and destiny.

Living between land and water, Seed Woman continues to create new plants and trees for the Earth. Her dress floats softly, and gently caresses the waters where she brings continuing life and death and renewal to living things.

THESE DAYS, SEED WOMAN ASKS, “WHAT IS MY SONG?”
Can you hear it in the forest? Can you hear it in the rivers and mountains? Can you feel it in the earth under your bare feet? The energy and chorus of the song is there; just be calm and listen.
